One of my favorite parts about graduation sets is making them personal.
Thereβs something really special about seeing your school colors come together in a way that represents all the hard work that got you there. Whether itβs bold, bright, or more mutedβit tells a story.
This palette is meant to be flexible. You can swap colors, adjust tones, and really make it your own.
When Iβm working with school colors, I like to:
- Slightly soften bold tones (so they photograph better)
- Keep designs balanced so one color doesnβt overpower everything
- Add neutrals when needed to bring everything together
Itβs less about perfectionβand more about creating something that feels meaningful.
Color Breakdown per 1 cup of royal icing
- When mixing these bold, classic school spirit colors, a little goes a long wayβbut each shade builds a little differently.
- For red, start with about 3β4 drops of red gel per 1 cup of royal icing, then let it sit to deepen into a richer tone before adding more.
- Royal blue typically needs 2β3 drops of blue gel, and like most darker colors, it will continue to develop as it rests.
- Bright yellow is much more forgivingβabout 1β2 drops of yellow gel will give you a vibrant, sunny color without overpowering the icing.
- And for white, youβll simply use your base icing as-is, but if you want a brighter, cleaner white, you can add a tiny touch of white gel or food coloring brightener. I always recommend starting light and building slowlyβyou can always add more, but once itβs too dark, itβs much harder to bring it back.
